The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans got a convincing victory on Wednesday, December 22 when they defeated the Hurricane Redskins 63-38 at Spartan Gym in Fairlea.
It was an important win for East before they head to a Holiday tournament in Charleston, South Carolina which starts this Tuesday, December 28.
Hurricane (3-4) actually started off the game well in the opening minutes after Erin Dempsey hit a short shot then Lauren Dye answered a Cadence Stewart three with a little runner in the lane and the Redskins led 4-3. But over the next couple possessions, Summers scored off an offensive rebound, and it opened the flood gates to a blowout. Summers and Stewart hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the first and East led 26-9 after the first quarter.
The rest of the game was actually close with the Spartans (6-0) winning 37-29, but the big opening period fueled the outcome.
Summers went 12-of-19 from the field including two threes, and hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She finished with a game high 33 points and 13 rebounds. The Wyoming East transfer has proved to be an important offseason pickup.
Stewart had 19 points and connected on 5-of-9 shots from downtown. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Layla Pence hauled in 13 rebounds for the Spartans.
Dye led Hurricane with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.
East’s defense held the Redskins to 28 percent shooting as Brooke Davis and Allie Dunford always contribute on that end and this me was no different.
The Spartans are now in South Carolina waiting for their first game of the tournament this Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
