Cavaliers Claim Sectional Championship

CHARMCO – Greenbrier West dominated Charleston Catholic 3-0 Wednesday night to claim the Class A Region 3 Section 2 championship. The Lady Cavaliers never trailed in any of the three sets, winning handily 25-13, 25-11, and 25-12. With the win, head coach Cindy Nutter’s squad secured its fourth consecutive sectional championship. Realistically, though, the Lady Cavaliers have set their sights much higher after reaching the state tournament the past four seasons. They took their first step Wednesday night.

Senior Kenzie O’Dell set the tone on the first volley of the night, tomahawking a thunderous spike back into the John C. Estep Gymnasium court that got the Cavalier faithful roaring. It would be a precursor of things to come the rest of the match. O’Dell followed up with another windmill-style kill to build the West lead to 5-1. Every time it looked as if the Irish would try to respond, O’Dell was there to shut them down with an in-your-face return. O’Dell returned another Irish volley with authority to take the score to 7-3, then served the Lady Cavaliers to a 13-4 advantage. Meagan Poticher got in on the act with a forceful, hammering spike to take the West lead to 14-4. Charleston Catholic regained control for one serve before Kadie O’Dell asserted the Cavaliers’ dominance of the net with a big spike of her own. The Lady Cavaliers then came in waves as Poticher’s spike made it 17-7 West, Kadie’s smash regained control at 18-8, and back-to-back Kenzie missiles made it 20-9. Natalie Agee made an impressive sprawling dig to keep the volley alive for the Cavaliers as they looked to put Charleston Catholic away, and yet another Kenzie kill made it 23-9 before Greenbrier West took the first set 25-13.

In the second set, Kadie took her turn at terrifying the Irish squad. Kadie sent the ball screaming at the Irish defenders, each one careening off their hands into the stands. Kadie’s spikes took the lead from 6-1 to 9-1 and eventually 13-1 before Charleston Catholic head coach Hannah King called a timeout. The Irish were reeling, but the timeout bought them a bit of a reprieve as they were able to score on a few breakpoints until Kenzie took over once again. Kenzie smashed the ball into the floor to make it 19-7 West. Poticher pooched the ball across the net for a 20-8 Cavalier lead, then kept Greenbrier West in control with a kill to make it 23-11. Poticher served out the remainder of the set finishing with an ace for a 25-11 win.

The third set was much of the same as Greenbrier West just ran away from Charleston Catholic. Loren Hanna served the Cavaliers to an 8-1 advantage. A Nutter return was volleyed back to the Cavaliers before Kenzie O’Dell blistered the Irish with another bounce into the court. Allison Dunn got in on the scoring action with a kill to make the Cavalier lead 14-4. With a 15-5 Cavalier advantage, Riley Robertson served to take Greenbrier West to a 19-5 lead. Brooke Nutter softly returned a volley to make it 21-7 Cavaliers, then blocked a return for a 22-8 West advantage. Kenzie used a rarely seen tip to lift West to a 23-10 lead before Nutter served to end the set and match, securing the sectional championship with a 25-12 win.

The Lady Cavaliers will travel to Charleston Catholic this Saturday for the Class A Region 3 Championship. Both teams in the sectional final qualified for regional competition. The Cavaliers and Irish now await the finish of the Region 3 Section 1 tournament tonight between Summers County and James Monroe. Greenbrier West will face the runner-up finisher while Charleston Catholic will match up with the Section 1 champion. The Cavaliers will play at 6 P.M. on Saturday.
