The Alderson Public Library has several upcoming programs for local children.
The first program is “Hop on the Bunny Reading Trail.” This is a reading encouragement program. Kids are prompted to read during the month of March and then submit their list of books read to the library. At the end of the program, there will be a drawing to win an Easter basket.
There will be bunny cards available for use as a book log, but kids can also draw their own or simply write their list on a piece of paper. All submissions must include the child’s name and phone number along with the name of the books they read and their favorite characters from each book.
Children must read at least four books but are encouraged to read more. The more books they read, the more chances they get to win. Submissions can be dropped off at City National Bank in Alderson or at the library. They can also be mailed to the library at 15 Walnut Ave, Alderson WV 24910.
This program began on March 1. The drawing will take place on April 2 at City National Bank. There will be two Easter baskets to win as well as other fun prizes. The Easter baskets will be on display at the bank. Posters announcing this program will be placed around town at different locations such as Alderson Big Wheel, City National Bank and local stores. Information is also available on the library’s Facebook page, Alderson Public Library.
Library Director Rose Spencer said she hopes to get kids reading while also providing something nice for Easter.
The library is also holding a free diamond painting class for kids aged 15 years or older.
Diamond painting is a mosaic art form that has only recently entered the craft world. The painter adds small resins to a canvas that is marked with numbers that correspond to different colored “diamonds.” They are refered to as diamonds because the resins sparkle much like a diamond. Once completed, all of the diamonds together form a picture.
The class will take place on March 18 at 6 p.m. It will also be available on March 19 at 1 p.m. Participants have the option to attend one or both classes.
All supplies for this class will be provided. Even though it is a free class, all participants must register beforehand to ensure there are enough supplies available. To register, call the library at 304-445-7221 during normal operating hours. When registering, be sure to detail whether it is for one day or both, if only attending one day, be sure to note which day.
According to Spencer, there is also a Mothers Day Basket giveaway in the works. When it gets closer to Mothers Day, any mother interested in winning can fill out an entry form that will be located at City National Bank. Entry will be free.
Spencer also noted that all of these programs are being sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The Friends will meet in March to plan further programs and activities.
